Mead Day

August 6, 2022

Mead Day - August

Mead Day was created for lovers of alcoholic drinks based on honey. Mead has ancient roots, but remains in demand in the modern world. It can be sour, sweet, strong, low-alcohol, with or without gas – in a word, almost any kind.

History

Mead was known to ancient civilizations in all parts of the world. The fermenting properties of honey were appreciated by Europeans, Asians, and Africans. The ancient Greeks even preferred such drinks to wine. Medieval Europe has not lost the traditions of mead making, preserving it to this day.

The day dedicated to ‘drunk honey’ was established in 2002. It was starter by the community of brewers of America.

Interesting facts

  • Intoxicating honey is mentioned in the sacred books of Hinduism and in the works of medieval bards.
  • The optimal snack is apples, berries, and plain sweets.
  • The drink is best consumed chilled, especially in summer.

How to take part

Go to a nearby bar or liquor store and buy as much mead as you want. Be careful, your eyes may go wide, because modern mead comes with a variety of flavors and aromas. You will find drinks with berry and fruit flavors, with spices and herbs. If you are serious, take several at once to taste them gradually.

Try making your own drink. Study the information about this process so as not to make a mistake at any step. For a beginner, this is not that easy to do, since the preparation requires two stages of fermentation taking place in two different vessels. The whole process can take up to a year: make sure you don’t lose your enthusiasm by that time!
