Event of categorical importance for history of country is celebrated on large scale on July 19 and this is Juneteenth or Freedom Day. Abolition of slavery became fundamental principle of development of democratic power striving for leadership.

The History

Remarkable holiday has origins in state of Texas, officially recognized in country. Federal order to abolish slavery was signed by Army General Gordon Granger. Document promised liberation to slaves of Texas. Abraham Lincoln later created, certified Proclamation on Emancipation of Slaves, relying on successful advance of Union Army in territories beyond control during Civil War. Final completion of cancellation process took place in 1866.

Kentucky, Delaware were last states to implement exemption law.

  • Initially, celebration in South took place with participation, support of church communities.
  • Culinary festival is integral part of festive events, it is valuable tradition.
  • Event gained additional significance when struggle for recognition of rights of the black population and widespread emphasis on achievements of African Americans in various fields of art began in the 70s.

Festive event has not received recognition in Hawaii, North and South Dakota.
