Dedicated to magnificent creatures, International Orangutan Day is celebrated around the world. Orangutans have been endangered for decades. Today we want to tell people that they still need our protection. Join the volunteer movement and support the forest dwellers!
The History
We did not find information about the founding people, but now it does not matter – the main thing is that there are followers who support the goals. Interestingly, in November, the Week of Care for Orangutans takes place, in which the main problems of these animals are raised.
Large monkeys are considered the ancestors of gorillas: they spend most of their time in trees in their natural environment in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. The biggest problem for them is deforestation. Also, extinction is made worse by illegal hunting, which annually claims about 3,000 lives.
They have one feature – long arms that practically touch the ground. Thanks to this, orangutans easily move from tree to tree. They feed mainly on grass, but they can eat insects or even meat.

- Have DNA 97% similar to human’s;
- Can weigh up to 220 pounds;
- Live in captivity for up to 60 years;
- Have an arm span of 6.5 meters;
- Have high intelligence, easily adapting objects to their own needs;
- Afraid of water;
- Do not like ‘noisy company’, preferring solitude.
How to take part
On International Orangutan Day, make a donation to protection organizations – any funds will not be superfluous. Visit the nearest zoo and observe their life, manners, and habits. You can learn more about them by talking to local workers.
