International Grenache Day is dedicated to the Grenache or Garnacha grape variety. This day makes it possible to enjoy not only these juicy berries but also the rich wine which is obtained from them. Celebrated every third Friday in September, in 2022 it falls on September 16th.
History
The celebration was first held in 2010 at the Grenache Symposium. This organization holds events and competitions every few years to promote this grape variety and the wine made from it.
Grenache is one of the most widespread and unpretentious grape varieties grown on six continents. The main condition for obtaining a good harvest is a hot and dry climate. For this reason, it is mostly cultivated in Spain. Two of its varieties are especially valued there: Red Garnacha and Garnacha Blanca. Grapes are often used to create an assemblage – they are combined with Tempranillo or Syrah varieties, for example.
The wine from this grape is quite strong. The bouquet reveals bright tones of red garden berries and pepper motives in the aftertaste. The sweetness of the first sip is replaced by spice and slight astringency. Grenache wine goes well with grilled meat.
Interesting facts
