Drive Your Corvette to Work Day

July 1

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day is celebrated on July 1 because the first Corvette was launched on June 30 in 1953. Initially, this American icon of the automotive industry was produced at a plant in the city of Flint. Over 1.6 million Corvettes have now been produced, and the Flint facility was demolished in 2003. But you can get acquainted with the first generation of these cars at the Corvette Museum, and you can still buy a brick from a disassembled factory.

History

The tradition of celebrating Drive Your Corvette to Work Day began thanks to the founder of Mid America Motorworks, who created this holiday in 2001. As Mike Yager has argued, many Corvette owners value their cars very much, consider them special, and therefore drive them only occasionally. Therefore, a Corvette needs to be shown to others at least one day a year. He also thought it would be a great opportunity to meet other Corvette owners.

Interesting facts

  • In the 1960s, the popularity of this brand of American sports car increased thanks to the release of the TV show “Route 66”, where the heroes traveled in a Chevy Corvette;
  • The car got its name from Myron Scott, who opened the dictionary on the letter “C” and came across the word ‘corvette’, meaning a small, fast, and maneuverable warship;
  • The third Corvette released is now on sale for $1.06 million.
