Cycle to Work Day

Cycle to Work Day promotes cycling. This transportation method is much more environmentally friendly than driving. Also, the day is intended to draw attention to the need to comply with the rules of the road.

History

Cycle to Work Day appeared in 1956. The proliferation of bicycles was driven by a post-war shortage of fuel. Little thought was given to the environment at that time.

Currently, people are interested in alternative means of transportation primarily as a way to reduce the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The need for a careful attitude to the surrounding world becomes more obvious every year.

Interesting facts

  • A bicycle costs its owner much less than a car. This applies to the cost of the vehicle itself, repairs, and spare parts. Also, the bike does not need fuel.
  • Cycling is good for the heart and prevents the development of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Cyclists use a special sign language to communicate on the roads – learn it, even if you don’t have a bike, so as not to get into an accident.
  • The first prototype of a bicycle was presented to the public at the end of the 18th century.

How to take part

If you’ve never ridden a bike to work before, this is a great place to start. You may be so inspired that you even decide to buy a bike. Be sure to read information on how to choose the right model, find out about the cycling rules in your city and where the bike lanes are.

When going somewhere on the ‘iron horse’, for safety reasons, wear a helmet and reflective clothing. Such measures save the lives of many cyclists and pedestrians every year.
