Curlew Day

Curlew Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to the Curlew. It was created to raise public awareness of this bird species, as well as to strengthen conservation efforts. It is celebrated on March 16.

History

It would not be possible to call the Curlews faceless and unmemorable birds. This species is characterized by long thin paws with curved claws and a narrow thin beak, which is also slightly curved at the end. This body structure helps them find food in the swampy terrain. Thanks to the beak, they can burrow into the muddy bottom and get food from there. The birds feed on small frogs, worms, insects, and larvae.

Today, the Curlew Sandpiper is on the verge of extinction. The reason for this is the active human activity of draining the marshlands to organize there sites for crops, construction of industries, and so on. Destruction of the natural habitat of these birds leads to a decrease in their population. The Curlew Day celebration continues an initiative by Mary Colwell, who decided to remedy the plight of the birds and in 2017 announced the creation of a worldwide holiday dedicated to the issue of declining populations.
