British Columbia Day

British Columbia Day is a Canadian holiday dedicated to the province of British Columbia. This province is located in the west of the country and is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is famous for its mountains and ski resorts, as well as its rich cultural diversity.

History

British Columbia became part of the Canadian Confederation in 1871. The province received its official holiday 103 years later, but even before that, on the first Monday of August, celebrations were held dedicated to the abolition of slavery in the region.

British Columbia Day is traditionally held on a grand scale. On this holiday, there is an opportunity to visit not only festivals dedicated to the history and culture of the province, but also other events.

Interesting facts

  • The coastal zone of British Columbia is very picturesque, so British Columbia Day is a great excuse to take a walk along the coast.
  • Vancouver, the largest city in British Columbia, is famous for its fireworks – it even hosts an annual pyrotechnics festival.
  • Vancouver is a very warm, even hot city – stereotypes about cold Canada do not apply to it.

How to take part

You can visit a festival dedicated to the holiday – here you can taste local cuisine, listen to music, or even watch a theater performance. If you love anime, head to Anime Revolution. Vancouver also has a Pride Parade that day.

The holiday will be more interesting if you read about the history and culture of the region before going. This will broaden your horizons and help you make interesting conversations – and therefore new acquaintances.
