World Vegan Day

If you love meat dishes, World Vegan Day might not be for you, but if you take a closer look, you’ll be surprised to find out how many people around the world follow this type of nutrition. What began as a dietary trend has now become an entire philosophy and lifestyle. Vegans believe it is both pleasant and easy to live without violence and cruelty, and to give up animal products.

History

Vegetarianism originated in the 20th century, spearheaded by Donald Watson and Elise Shrigley, members of the Vegetarian Society in Great Britain. The pair went even further and excluded all animal products from their diet, yet their society was not keen on the innovation. This is why they decided to found the Vegan Society. In 1994, the Society’s chairman, Louise Wallis, proposed celebrating World Vegan Day on November 1st. This date was met with confusion since it coincided with the Day of the Dead or Calan Gaeaf. Additionally, the exact date of the Vegan Society’s founding (1944) is still unknown. Nevertheless, the date has not changed and World Vegan Day is still celebrated annually.

Interesting facts

  • The holiday has become increasingly popular thanks to famous vegetarians like Zac Effron, Pamela Anderson, Ariana Grande, Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, and Tom Cruise.
  • Many restaurants and cafes join the celebration each year, offering special menus and interesting recipes.
  • The first vegetarian cookbook was published in 1874 by Russell Thatcher Troll.
  • It takes 2500 gallons of pure water to produce one pound of beef, making veganism a great way to save water.
  • Since 2012, Los Angeles has gone meat-free every Monday.

How to take part

Living vegan for just one day is easy. Supermarkets and stores offer plenty of plant-based products that are both tasty and healthy. Fast food chains like Burger King and KFC have also added vegetarian dishes to their menus. Tell your friends about the holiday and motivate them to try something new.
