National Tortilla Chip Day

History

Carrens and her husband owned a factory in Los Angeles in which the automated production of such tortillas was set up. However, the machine often malfunctioned, producing a flatbread with an improper marketable appearance. The woman decided not to throw away the deformed tortillas. She cut them into triangular pieces and fried them. Thus, the first Tortilla chips appeared.

The snack quickly gained popularity in Latin and North America. Already in 1943, the first dish based on these chips was created. It was called Nachos. Classic chips were made and served with different sauces (guacamole, for example) or meat/vegetable dishes.
