The History
School nursing began in 1873 in Brussels. Then city-wide school verifications were held there. The first vacancy for a school nurse appeared in 1902 in New York. The post was taken by Lina Rogers. Thanks to her, the infectious level of diseases in the city decreased.
National School Nurse Day was proclaimed in 1974. This event was preceded by the Department of School Nurses, created in 1968. With the proclamation of a national holiday, the National Education Association and other organizations expressed recognition of the medical workers and called on all citizens to thank them for their great work and the well-being of their children.
How to take part
The main goal is showing respect and gratitude to the school nurse. Conferences, exhibitions, and holiday concerts are organized in schools. Children and their parents also take part in the congratulations, presenting small gifts and saying words of gratitude to their beloved school nurse.
