National Harvey Wallbanger Day is a holiday dedicated to a popular cocktail made from vodka, Galliano liqueur, and orange juice. The peak in its popularity occurred in the 70s, although it can still be found in many bars today. The cocktail is so easy to make that it is often created at home, allowing for experimentation with different flavors.

History

The origin of this drink is uncertain, but one legend claims that it was first made by Donato “Duke” Antone, a mixologist at the Blackwatch bar in Hollywood. It is believed that the cocktail was named after a regular customer, Harvey, who lived on Manhattan Beach. However, this version is not entirely reliable, as evidence suggests that Antone was in Connecticut at the time of the drink’s invention. Another bar, Pancho’s Bar on Manhattan Beach, is also credited with creating the cocktail.

Interesting facts

• For a while, the drink failed to take off until a cartoon character, Harvey Wallbanger, was created. As a result, the sales of Galliano skyrocketed.
• Within a few years, the drink had become the best-imported cocktail in America, served to passengers on flights and during rail trips.
• The Milwaukee Brewers baseball team earned the nickname “Harvey Wallbangers” after a victory.
