The History

Tradition of celebration Mother’s Day began in the 1600s. Lots of poor people served rich families. They lived in servants’ rooms and were rarely at home. But on Mother’s Day, held on the 4th Sunday of Lent, every person was unconditionally given a day off. People went home and congratulated their mothers.

In the US, Mother’s Day was first supported in 1872. The initiator was the Republican anthem’s author Julia Ward Howe. She suggested dedicating at least one day a year to the women giving life to everyone.

In 1907, Philadelphia resident Anna Jarvis began the establishment of the National Mother’s Day. She persuaded the church to change the date, offering the second Sunday in May. The event was organized, but there were not official statements. Anna sent letters to politicians asking them to establish the National holiday. As a result, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a decree establishing National Mother’s Day.
